Experience the Magic of Maui’s Whale Season

★★★★★ 5.0 (332 reviews)

Every winter, something truly magical happens in Maui’s waters. From December through April, thousands of humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the warm, sheltered bays of South Maui to breed and raise their young.

Our Whale Watching Lahaina & Makena Tour invites you to witness this breathtaking natural event up close, from a peaceful, eco-friendly kayak.

It’s not simply a sightseeing tour, but rather a deep and emotional connection to nature where you will feel the sea beneath your kayak when the whale makes its dramatic breach just metres away, the big tail catching the light and sparkling.

Kayaking, snorkeling, and whale watching...... Cannot get any better? We'll start the morning out paddling where the whales spend time either playing, or transiting between and west Maui. If you've done this before, you'll always remember and want to hit repeat (anyone remember "Groundhog Day" movie?). We bet even Bill Murray wouldn't want this one to end!

At Maui Eco Tours, we hold the view that whale watching is an intimate, respectful, and memorable experience.

This is the reason why we only take small groups with us and operate only during the calm, early-morning hours thus there are no crowds and you have the greatest opportunity to watch whales carry on with their natural routines.

We offer departures from Makena Landing in South Maui and the Lahaina coastline on Maui’s west side. Both locations provide calm waters and incredible views, ideal for whale watching and photography.
Absolutely not! Our tours are beginner-friendly. Our guide will provide a short safety and paddling lesson before departure, and all equipment is included.
Safety always comes first. If conditions are too windy or rough, we may reschedule your tour or issue a refund. Luckily, South Maui’s mornings are calm most of the year, especially during whale season.
Most tours last 2.5 to 3 hours, giving you plenty of time to paddle, observe whales, and enjoy Maui’s coastal scenery.
Absolutely. Along with humpback whales, you may spot Hawaiian green sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and colorful tropical fish around the reefs of Makena Bay and Lahaina.
The tour runs year-round, but spaces are limited. During whale season (December–April), you may also spot humpback whales while kayaking.
We recommend: ● Reef-safe sunscreen ● Swimsuit and towel ● Sunglasses and hat ● Water bottle (refillable) ● Waterproof camera or GoPro
Yes! We encourage it. Just make sure your camera is waterproof or in a dry bag. We also offer photo add-on packages if you prefer to relax and let us capture the memories for you.
